With the introduction of the world’s first 1.8-inch drive in 2001, Toshiba not only launched a new class of hard disk drives, it revolutionised the hard disk drive world and enabled an entire industry of storage based consumer electronics. The world’s leading mp3 player brands, digital camcorders, gaming consoles, GPS navigation systems and mobile multimedia applications all rely on top performance, high capacity Toshiba HDDs. The drives deliver advanced features and functionality which consumers now expect to be the norm. To create these devices that users demand, CE manufacturers need storage in a compact size, with low power consumption to save battery life and high capacity to house immense digital content.
Thanks to Perpendicular Magnetic Recording Technology (PMR) which was launched by Toshiba in 2004, our 1.8-inch HDDs feature up to 250 GB. The conventional method for recording data on a magnetic disk was the longitudinal recording. It aligned the data bits horizontally, parallel to the surface of the disk. In contrast, the new PMR aligns the bits vertically, perpendicular to the disk, which allow additional room on a disk to save more data, thus, enabling higher recording densities.
With more than 70 million 1.8-inch HDDs shipped to date, Toshiba is the undisputed leader in small form factor HDD market for CE devices. The company offers the traditional 1.8-inch HDDs and the smaller CE 1.8-inch HDDs, which is a common interface for consumer electronic applications as one can save even more space when designing consumer electronic devices.
